What makes it different.

Four reasons Mikumi is where most southern Tanzania safaris begin.

The nearest real wilderness to Dar

A four to five hour drive, or a short flight, puts you inside a park that looks and feels like the Serengeti, without the long transfer north.

The Mkata floodplain

Mikumi's open grassland is built around this seasonal floodplain, where elephant, buffalo, zebra and giraffe gather at the hippo pools year-round.

Easy distances, full days

The park's road network is compact, so game drives cover more ground in less time. Two short drives can feel like a full day elsewhere.

A working stop on the southern route

Mikumi sits on the road to Udzungwa and Ruaha, making it the natural first or last stop on a longer southern circuit.

When to go.

Dry Season

June to October is the prime game-viewing window. Grass is short, water is scarce, and animals concentrate around the Mkata River and remaining pools, so sightings come quickly and the roads stay firm.

Green Season

November to May brings short afternoon storms and a flush of new growth. Birdlife is at its best, and the park stays open and accessible throughout.

Getting there.

By Rail

The SGR express covers the first leg to Morogoro in around 90 minutes, with a short private transfer into the park from there.

By Road

A sealed road runs the full four to five hours from Dar es Salaam, the same route used for onward trips to Udzungwa and Ruaha.

Good to know.

Yes. It's the only southern park close enough for a single-day safari, combining a morning departure with two game drives before returning the same evening.

es, for different reasons. Mikumi is smaller and far less visited, so a short safari here feels more private, and it works well as an easy add-on rather than a competing destination.

Camps near the Mkata floodplain put you closest to the hippo pools, where most of the dry-season wildlife activity happens.

Yes, easily. It sits on the same road as Udzungwa and Ruaha, so most southern circuit itineraries use it as a first or final stop.

Your safari can start closer than you think see how close a safari really is.
